RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 2, 2015 — USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds New York onion producers that the final date to apply for insurance on next year’s crop is February 1, 2015. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing policies also have until February 1 to do so. Crop insurance provides protection against a loss in onion production due to natural perils, such as drought or excessive moisture.

The 2015 price election for yellow onions is $12.85 per hundredweight. The price election for red and white onions is $19.00 per hundredweight. Onion insurance is available in Cayuga, Genesee, Madison, Oneida, Ontario, Orange, Orleans, Oswego, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties. Producers should contact a local crop insurance agent for premium quotes and further details.

Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA website.
